Following his mommy’s wishes, Timmy set out on a journey in search of food. The grass field was like a huge jungle to his tiny body. After walking for days in search of food, Timmy had grown very tired and hungry. He was about to give up hope.
All of a sudden, Timmy looked between two blades of grass and saw a big old oak tree, very far away. Even though he was very tired and hungry, Timmy was determined to get to the oak tree and bring back some wood for his family.
Timmy walked and walked and walked, but the trip was much too long for such a little guy. As Timmy sat down to rest, a shiny black beetle walked by and noticed that Timmy was not happy at all. The beetle said, “What’s wrong, little guy?”
Timmy explained to the beetle that he had to get to the big oak tree. The beetle smiled and replied, “Jump on my back and I can run you over there in no time!”
Timmy was so happy, he jumped into the air and landed on the beetle’s back. The beetle shouted, “Hang on! Here we go!”
But the beetle’s back was so slippery that Timmy fell off right away!
Once again, Timmy was losing hope. A moment later, he noticed a grasshopper hopping on by. “Excuse me,” said Timmy, “are you by any chance heading toward that old oak tree?”
“Why yes I am!” said the grasshopper. “Would you like a ride?”
“I would like nothing more,” replied Timmy.
Timmy was so happy, he jumped into the air and landed on the grasshopper’s back. However, the ride was much too fast for Timmy, and he fell right off of the grasshopper.
By now, Timmy thought he would never make it to the oak tree, but he refused to give up hope. He sat down on a rock and thought it over, saying to himself, “There must be a way for me to make it to that big old oak tree.”
A moment later, a big worm wiggled up to Timmy and asked him, “What’s wrong?”
Timmy shared his whole story with the worm, including the parts about the slippery beetle and the speedy grasshopper. After listening, the worm replied, “Well, you should have no problem sticking to my back, and I don’t move too fast either!”
Timmy knew that it would take the worm a long time to get to the old oak tree. However, he was touched by the worm’s kind offer of a ride. So Timmy thanked the worm and climbed up on his back. “This is perfect,” said Timmy, “not too slippery and not too fast!”
All of a sudden, a big black crow swooped down and tried to grab Timmy and the worm. The two friends were very scared. The worm thought it would be a good idea for them to dig a hole in the dirt, and hide in it until the crow was gone.
A long while later, Timmy and the worm decided it was safe to leave the hole. But just as Timmy climbed back onto his friend’s back, the big black crow swooped down, snatched up the two of them, and headed straight toward the big old oak tree! The crow flew up to a giant branch, then dropped Timmy and the worm into his nest.
Having trapped Timmy and the worm, the big black crow flew off in search of more food. Although Timmy and his new friend were very scared, Timmy rubbed his belly and said, “I am so hungry from our long journey.”
So Timmy began to eat through the little branches of the crow’s nest, until the nest fell to the ground and the two were able to escape.
Once they were on the ground, Timmy placed the rest of the crow’s nest on the worm’s back, and they both set out on the long journey home.
